Using Clips to Create Stop Motion Videos

Updated: May 5, 2020

One of my eighth grade assignments was to create a stop motion video to show how signals pass from one neuron to another. After teaching about the anatomy and functions of neurons, the students created models of neurons using pipe cleaners, clay, wire, beads, and other craft supplies. Then two groups combined together to demonstrate how a signal/message is transferred along a neuron and proceeds to make the "jump" to the next neuron.

Many stop-motion resources/apps were blocked by our district, and I prefer students do not use their personal devices for school assignments. This was the perfect opportunity to incorporate the iPads into our curriculum. I let the students explore their options, but most decided to use Clips. The app was great! The kids found it very easy to learn and were able to create professional-looking stop-motion videos very quickly. I was really impressed with how the students personalized their videos by adding narration, music, on-screen explanations, and other features. I hope to incorporate the use of Clips more often next year to give students more flexibility in showcasing their knowledge of class content.
